Jon graduated from the University of Michigan with both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering. He has spent the majority of his career in the aerospace industry designing, analyzing, and testing various propulsion devices (including both jet engines and solid rocket motors) for companies such as GE Aviation and Williams International. He has also spent some time in the automotive industry designing and validating various vehicle exterior components for General Motors. Currently, he creates and manages various internal software tools at BAE that are used within the R&D and Production areas, as well as performing motor/grain/ballistic design and optimizations.
Use of MDO in Solid Rocket Motor Design and Analysis
Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) development provides numerous opportunities for the advantages of an MDO approach to be applied. This includes, but is not limited to, the hardware design phase, the calibration of ballistic models, and the maximization of production yield. A further look into how modeFRONTIER and its capabilities can be incorporated into each of these particular stages of an SRM development program will be presented. Specifically, the typical SRM design constraints, components, and performance goals will be discussed, and two practical examples showing how modeFRONTIER was used to improve ballistic modeling accuracy and production efficiency will be reviewed.
